My name is Elisabeth Donati and I’m the creator of The Money Game™. I’ve been delivering a powerful financial education curriculum called The Money Camp and Camp Millionaire since 2002. I developed the program after realizing in my mid-30′s that the only reason I didn’t understand money was because no one taught me about money!

How a Painful Realization Morphed into My passion and purpose

I had three painful realizations in my mid-30′s. First, I realized that I knew almost nothing about managing and investing my money.

Second, I realized I was going to have to teach myself how to manage and invest for my own future.

And third, I realized I was not alone. Everyone I talked to seemed to be in the same boat…and it was a very BIG boat.

Have you ever heard the phrase “reticular activation”? Well, it means that once you become aware of something, you see that something everywhere! Like when you buy that fancy new car that was just released and on the way home, you see 10 of them!

Well, when I became aware of how much I hadn’t learned about money and investing when I was a kid, or in high school OR in college, I became acutely aware of how very FEW of us are ever taught about money.

I started to notice that people everywhere were talking about money…in the store, at the gas station, at parties, IN A BATHROOM STALL on the cell phone. I was shocked. People were lost in the world of money with no roadmap of how to get home, score a run or win the game.

The wise man who inspired
the passion in me to make a difference

It was during this time that a retired business attorney named Walt, inspired something deep inside my soul by writing a letter to the editor in our local Santa Barbara newspaper. Having helped take several companies public over his career, Walt knew a thing or two about money.

In his letter, Walt chastised the residents of Santa Barbara for not having enough money to buy a home (real estate in ANY economy is expensive in Santa Barbara). Walt said, “If you’d BEEN doing with your money what you SHOULD have been doing with your money, you’d HAVE enough money to buy a house…even in Santa Barbara, CA!”

But it wasn’t this little scolding that hit me square in the heart…it was his last paragraph. He said, and I paraphrase, “And when, as a nation, are we going to start teaching our children about money?”

I stopped dead in my tracks. Something struck me deeply and I knew I had to do something about it. I just didn’t understand why financial education wasn’t taught in schools and I was frustrated because even though I got mostly A’s in high school and in college, I didn’t know how to use this basic substance we need to survive, and THRIVE, in life.

A couple of hours later, I stood up at work, and to my fellow employees and the world, asked, “Why doesn’t someone just create a money camp for kids in the summer where they learn what none of us are taught in school?”

Well, guess who the Universe put in charge of hosting that first Money Camp for Kids? Yup…I felt as if a giant magic wand had been cast my way and the whole world said, “Why don’t YOU do it!”

The rest is history. I started The Money Camp for Kids with the simple idea of putting on a summer camp to teach kids about money. We had 39 kids! The next year we did four camps. The following we did six. Then people everywhere, finding us on the internet, wanted me to teach them what I was doing. So, I created the five-day financial education Train-the-Trainer event that empowers others to do what I started here in Santa Barbara.

We later changed the name to Camp Millionaire (to better appeal to our market…the kids) and in 2006 started creating what is now the foundation of every program we teach…The Money Game™.

Games are the best way to learn and the easiest way to teach

I didn’t want to create another boring financial literacy program. I had ordered most of them online (most are free AND you get what you pay for) and found them dull, irrelevant and many of them completely inadequate…they didn’t teach children what I knew children needed to learn to be REALLY successful in life. The existing financial literacy curriculums didn’t teach the information that I wish I HAD LEARNED when I was young!

• I wanted kids to question why they were making the financial decisions they were making…not just to do things because others were doing them.
• I wanted kids to replace the belief that, “I have to get a job” with thought like, “I wonder what business I can start? I wonder what service I can provide? I wonder how I can make the world a better place and make money in the process?”
• I wanted kids to know that financial freedom is their responsibility so they wouldn’t grow up dependent on parents or ‘the system’ that has been created for too many generations of victims.
• I wanted kids to know that financial freedom starts by making a choice to BE financially free.

But I realized that in order to do these things, kids had to know they COULD make these choices.

I love empowering people to be responsible for themselves…not be dependent on someone else…not blame someone else for where you end up in life…but to know that your current situation is the sum total of every choice you’ve made before.

At the end of our first Money Camp for Kids, parents were thrilled, the kids had learned financial principles they could begin to practice immediately and that would last them a lifetime and I was pleasantly exhausted and satisfied beyond measure.

Who knew that my simple idea to create a financial literacy camp would eventually give birth to a financial education revolution.

You see, our camps aren’t great simply because of WHAT we are teaching…they are highly effective at getting the principles we teach to stick because of HOW we teach.

In the beginning, people kept telling me to build a board game. I didn’t want to go that route because there were already great financial board games out there… Monopoly, Cash Flow for Kids, Money and a few more.

But one day, walking on the beach, I had this thought…

I initially had no idea what this would look like. But over time, The Money Game started to evolve.

First, as stations where the participants paid their expenses…then we taught them how to buy assets with the money they saved from Paying Themselves First and then giving them Passive Income for owning those assets.
